The attack happened in the University Street area in the early hours of Saturday.
A PSNI spokesman said they received a report that two males approached the man around 4.20am. One stabbed him once in the thigh and took his wallet.
The victim is receiving treatment for his injuries in hospital.
The attackers have been described as being aged in their late teens or early 20s, and both of light to average build.
One was wearing dark jeans and light coloured trainers, hooded top and coat with the hood up.
The second was wearing dark tracksuit bottoms with stripes down the legs, white trainers and a dark coloured hooded jacket with the hood up.
Police have urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or saw the two males in the area to contact detectives at Musgrave on 101 and quote reference number 312 23/11/19.
