Man suffers serious head injuries after being hit by car in Newtownards

A man is in a serious condition in hospital with head injuries after he was struck by a car in Co Down.

Police confirmed a male pedestrian was hit by a car on the Belfast Road in Newtownards near the Duck Pond at Kiltonga Wildlife Reserve.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance service received a call at 7.54am on Tuesday.

The man aged in his mid-thirties was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital for treatment to head injuries sustained in the incident.

His condition has been described as serious.

Police in Ards closed the Belfast Road in both directions for a period. It has since re-opened.

Also this morning in a separate incident, just after 8.40am a school boy was knocked down in Movilla Street.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said that after assessment at the scene the patient "declined the offer of transport to the hospital".
