A man needed hospital treatment after he was struck with a hammer during a serious assault.

The incident occurred in the St Gall's Avenue area of west Belfast on Sunday, but details were only released by police yesterday.

A man, armed with a hammer, called to the house at around 12.45pm on Sunday.

After answering the door, the female occupant was punched in the face. Her husband came to her assistance but was struck several times with the hammer and then assaulted by a woman who joined in the attack.

The man then broke windows of the house and a car before fleeing on foot.

Police said the man later received hospital treatment for head injuries.

Appealing for information, Detective Sergeant Stephen Gardiner said: "This was a very serious incident and traumatic for the occupants of the house."
