Man 'tried to choke partner'

By Alan Erwin

A man tried to choke and suffocate his partner in a row over him smoking cannabis in front of their infant daughter, the High Court has heard.

Gareth Reid is accused of holding a pillow over the woman's face and telling the child: "You're going to hear mummy's last breath."

Reid (25) faces charges of attempted murder, attempting to choke with intent, two counts of common assault and issuing two threats to kill.

Following his arrest, Reid spent nearly two weeks in a mental health unit before he was deemed fit for detention and interview.

Reid was seeking bail to stay at a hostel in Belfast.

But Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan adjourned the application until the accused's medical records are provided.
