Man tried to knife his old school friend, court is told

By Alan Erwin

A man broke into an old school friend's home in a bid to attack him with a knife, the High Court has heard.

Gary Neill (43) repeatedly tried to stab John Morton in the stomach as the two men struggled at the house in Newtownards, Co Down, prosecutors claimed. A police armed response unit then had to be called to his own house after he barricaded himself in during attempts to arrest him last week.

Neill, of Wandsworth Crescent, Belfast, denies a charge of aggravated burglary with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.

Bail was refused amid concerns he would fail to comply with release conditions due to alcoholism.

The attack is alleged to have been carried out at the James Street property on June 12. Conor Maguire, prosecuting, claimed the intruder lunged at the victim in the back garden.

"He attempted to stab Mr Morton at least twice in the stomach area," the barrister said.
