Man went ballistic with machete, court is told
A 23-year-old man slashed his mother, brother and girlfriend with a machete — leaving his partner’s finger hanging off, a court has been told.
Stephen Patrick O'Kane, a factory worker from Buncrana Road in Londonderry, appeared at the city’s magistrate’s court before Deputy District Judge Peter King with a bandage covering a head wound.
The defendant was charged with possessing a machete with intent to cause grievous injury, causing grievous bodily harm with intent to his brother and girlfriend and attempting to assault his mother.
He's also charged with causing criminal damage to a kitchen door.
The offences were allegedly carried out at his mother’s home in the Creggan area last Thursday morning.
A police officer said the defendant had “gone ballistic” in his mother's home with a 60-centimetre long machete.
He was arrested and taken to Altnagelvin Hospital where he was treated for injuries he said had been inflicted on him by his brother using a baseball bat.
A bail application was refused.
