Man who attacked paramedics spared jail
A brain-injured patient who attacked two paramedics in Belfast has avoided prison.
Joseph McLoughlin (38) was given a four-month suspended sentence for assaults on the man and woman at Hope Street in May this year.
McLoughlin, of Gortfin Street in the city, denied responsibility and claimed his mental state left him unable to remember the incident.
Belfast Magistrates Court heard he suffers from epilepsy and brain injuries due to a previous car accident.
He contested the assault charges based on a defence that his mental state cast doubt on an ability to commit the offences.
District Judge Fiona Bagnall accepted it had been an isolated episode.
