Man who drove car into Derry house is bailed

A 28-year-old man has appeared at the Magistrates Court in Londonderry charged with six offences linked to an incident at Cornshell Fields on Sunday evening when a Peugeot car crashed into the front porch of an occupied house.

Samuel McGinley from Cornshell Fields has admitted dangerous driving, drink-driving, failing to stop, to report and to remain at the scene of an accident.

However, the defendant denies assaulting a male witness by swinging a punch at him. A police officer told District Judge Barney McElholm that the defendant has 34 previous convictions in Northern Ireland and 32 previous convictions in the Republic of Ireland.

The officer said the defendant was arrested in a house at Cornshell Fields shortly after the incident dressed only in his boxer shorts.

The defendant was released on his own bail of £1,000. As part of his bail conditions he's to be electronically tagged, banned from entering within 500 metres of Cornshell Fields and ordered to report each day to Strand Road police station.
