Northern Ireland centenarian Maria McQuillan has died. The great-grandmother from Belfast passed away peacefully in hospital this week. She was 108.

Maria, who spent most of her life in The Village area of the city, was believed to be the |oldest person in Northern Ireland.

Her family, who are still coming to terms with the loss of the woman they dubbed the ‘matriarch’ of the family, told the Belfast Telegraph last night she will be dearly missed.

Granddaughter Julie McQuillan explained that despite her many years, her sudden death on Monday had come as a shock.

Maria was fiercely independent and had remained in her own home right up until last week, she said.

“She really was a very determined person, very strong minded,” Julie said.

A funeral service will be held for her at Richview Presbyterian Church today at 1pm.
