Mark Wahlberg's character in the film The Shooter led to interest in bombs, court told

By Michael Donnelly

A man who admitted having instructions on how to build bombs blamed his fascination for explosives on actor Mark Wahlberg's character in the film The Shooter.

Patrick Malachy Gordon (26), originally from Newtownhamilton Road, Armagh, pleaded guilty yesterday at Belfast Crown Court to four charges of having documents useful to terrorists on February 17, 2010.

He has just completed a five-year sentence in the Republic for terrorism offences and will be sentenced next month in Belfast for the other charges.

Gordon admitted having a handwritten note listing material suitable for use in the manufacture of "Napalm-type" incendiaries, electronic files containing a diagram of a pipe shotgun and instructions on how to make and detonate ammonium nitrate.

Some were allegedly retrieved from deleted files from his iPhone by police.

At the time, Newry Magistrates Court heard that Gordon became curious about bomb-making after watching The Shooter. In December 2011 he was jailed for five years for having the terrorist materials at Dromiskin, Co Louth. Having served two-thirds of the sentence, it is understood he was due for release last month.
