Former Irish President Mary McAleese returned to her native north Belfast yesterday to celebrate 150 years of Passionist presence at Holy Cross Church.

The Ardoyne woman was joined by her husband and hundreds of others for a thanksgiving Mass yesterday.

Also present was Fr Aidan Troy, who became known around the world as he spoke out for children during the loyalist Holy Cross school protests of 2001.

Fr Troy had tweeted earlier that it would be "great to be back, if only for a day, among people who will always hold a special place in my heart".

Fr Gary Donegan, who replaced him, and Fr Eugene McCarthy, who took Holy Cross on in 2016, were among the other Passionists there to mark the milestone in the history of Holy Cross.
