A DPD delivery van was hijacked and set alight in Londonderry yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze after being called to the Creggan area of the city.

The PSNI is reported to have set up checkpoints around Derry in the aftermath of the incident.

SDLP leader and Foyle MP Colum Eastwood said that those behind the attack had "set themselves against the wishes of the city" as it mourns the tragic passing of John Hume.

The former SDLP leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner died on Monday aged 83.

Sinn Fein's Martina Anderson said that "masked individuals" had hijacked a number of postal and delivery vans in Derry yesterday and on Monday.

The Foyle MLA also condemned the people behind the string of attacks.
