Masked gang in baseball attack

A masked gang forced their way into a house and beat up two men with baseball bats, police have said.

The aggravated burglary occurred at the Forthriver Road in north Belfast shortly after 5am on Saturday.

Four masked men forced their way in and ransacked the house before setting upon the two occupants with baseball bats and other weapons.

The 19-year-old and 22-year-old victims sustained cuts and bruises. Detectives at Antrim Road have appealed for information.

They said nothing was stolen at the house.

SDLP North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness condemned the beating.

"This was a brutal and savage attack that easily could have had lethal consequences," he said.

"These despicable incidents of violence do nothing to improve our community - they incite fear and hatred and destroy people's lives.

"Obviously people haven't learned from past mistakes and are eager to repeat them by indulging in these terrible acts of folly."

Mr Maginness appealed for anyone with information to pass it onto the police.
