Masked men robbed victims of cash at gunpoint in late night assault

Two men were mugged at gunpoint in a terrifying late night ordeal in Carrickfergus.

The pair were walking at Carnhill Place in the Co Antrim town shortly after midnight on Sunday when they were confronted by two masked men.

The attackers were said to be carrying suspected firearms, said police.

They threatened the two men and forced them to hand over money from their wallets before making off in the direction of Oakfield Drive.

The victims, one in his 40s and the other in his 50s, were not injured but left "shaken by their ordeal", a police spokesman said.

Oliver McMullan, Sinn Fein MLA, described the robbery as very disturbing.

"It must have been a terrifying experience for those involved and they were no doubt left shaken by the experience," he said.

"I would encourage anyone with information on the incident to bring it forward to the PSNI."

Investigators have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
