Master of his craft keeping past alive at historic home

By Staff Reporter

Master thatcher Mark Taggart is working to ensure a secure future for one of Londonderry's best loved historic dwellings.

Bridie's Cottage in Derry's Craft Village brings Ireland's past into the heart of the modern city, giving visitors a chance to experience the way people used to live.

Now Mark has been engaged to replace the thatched roof at the cottage at the heart of the attraction.

The Omagh man is one of the last experienced thatchers left in Northern Ireland, and has spoken out in the past about the importance of preserving the traditional type of roof.

Speaking earlier this year, Mark said that there are now only around 175 thatched cottages left in Northern Ireland, and without help from government to ensure they are preserved, the number could sink even lower over the coming decades.
