Matthew Goddard murder: Two arrested after man beaten with guitar in east Belfast

A man and woman have been arrested over the murder of Mathew Goddard in east Belfast on Wednesday.

Mr Goddard, who was 41, was found in a house in Chobham Street at about 9.40pm on Christmas Eve.

The PSNI said he was killed in an attack at his home and that he was beaten with a guitar.

Detective Chief Inspector John McVea said: "One of Mr Goddard’s hobbies was playing guitar and we believe his electric guitar was used at some stage during the attack however we are not prepared to disclose the exact cause of death at this stage.

"We are appealing for people to come forward with information to help bring those responsible for this ruthless murder before the courts and put them behind bars.

"We have set up a murder incident room in Musgrave Police Station and would urge members of the public to contact detectives on 101 or alternatively anyone wishing to pass information anonymously can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

DUP councillor for the area, Jim Rodgers, said he was "deeply concerned" by the development.

"This is just terrible news, especially over Christmas. My thoughts are with this man's family. It is too early to speculate about what has happened. I hope that anyone with information will contact police."
