Maureen and Malachy: Back where it began

By Allan Preston

Last night a Belfast couple celebrated a leap year engagement on the same spot they first met as children.

Malachy Houston said yes after Maureen McGarrity got down on one knee to pop the question at the gates of Belfast Castle.

The pair, who are both 46 and from north Belfast, were celebrating the good news last night.

Newly-engaged Maureen said: "I met Malachy Houston at the tender age of 12 when we struck up a friendship at the castle gates so that is where I decided to propose."

Before proposing yesterday evening, Maureen had set Malachy on a trip down memory lane with a treasure hunt around Belfast to places special to the couple.

"I created clues and placed them at bars and hotels in Belfast," said Maureen. "Each clue led Malachy to the next venue until he ended up at the gates of Belfast Castle at 6.30pm where our story began over three decades ago. Not only that but 30 of our friends and family were at the gates to give me some encouragement."

Malachy said: "I was very surprised and shocked, I get very emotional and it was lovely to see all her friends around her. She beat me to the big question."
