Mayor gives up MTV awards tickets

They may be the hottest tickets in town but Belfast's lord mayor has decided to give away his prized seats for the European MTV awards.

Niall O Donnghaile is offering the public the chance to win his two passes to Sunday night's glitzy do at the Odyssey arena where they can rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in music.

The mayor will still be making an appearance on the night in his capacity as first citizen but he had been given an additional two tickets in his capacity as a city councillor.

"As you can imagine I've been absolutely inundated with people asking me if I can get them tickets to the EMAs - they've been texting and tweeting me, and sending me messages on Facebook," said the Sinn Fein councillor.

"I thought this would be the fairest way of giving away my tickets, so I'm donating them to the council's online giveaway and hope whoever gets them has a great night."

Belfast is preparing for a music extravaganza like no other as the EMAs come to town.

While the likes of Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga are set to wow the audience at the Odyssey, Snow Patrol will be playing a gig outside Belfast City Hall, with the Red Hot Chili Peppers rocking the nearby Ulster Hall.

"I think no matter whether you're at the Odyssey Arena, City Hall, Ulster Hall or enjoying the awards from the comfort of your sofa, there's going to be a fantastic party atmosphere across Belfast," said the mayor.

The party is already under way as Belfast Music Week kicked off a huge programme of more than 170 gigs and events across the city in the run-up to the international MTV event.

As Belfast takes centre stage for Sunday's awards - expected to attract more than 600 million viewers worldwide - this week will see the biggest ever showcase of Northern Ireland's music talent, with gigs taking place in every corner of the city.
