Mayor of Limavady in bid to ban cars from Benone Beach
A beach where a mother and her child were injured after a drunk driver crashed into them may introduce a no-car-allowed policy in a bid to prevent a repeat of the incident.
The Mayor of Limavady wants the council to implement an all-out ban on cars on Benone Beach.
He has backed calls from Diane Wilkinson, who was holding her daughter in her arms when she was hit by a car.
She and four-year-old Abby were badly injured last year and following a court case last week where the driver was jailed, Mrs Wilkinson called on the authorities to implement safety measures.
Mayor Gerry Mullan has asked council officers to look at possible solutions.
Mr Mullan said: "Ideally what I would like to see is a complete absence of cars from the beach but if that isn't possible in the immediate future then I have asked that other solutions are investigated.
"Benone Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the country but trying to accommodate the huge crowds has meant that people do park on the beach."
