Meerkat cubs make Belfast Zoo debut

By Victoria Coffey

Belfast City Zoo has welcomed five new arrivals to the meerkat enclosure.

At just a third of the size of the adult meerkats, the five-week-old babies have been investigating the enclosure, with the rest of the ‘gang’ looking on for protection.

Zoo manager Mark Challis said: “The meerkats are one of the most popular enclosures in the zoo. There’s always visitors admiring them.”

Their mother Fraggle has been watching over them attentively for the past few weeks but now the babies are ready to venture out alone.

“They are just charging about into everything,” Mark added.

The zoo has also welcomed baby monkeys, sealions and a zebra this summer.
