Meeting over reconciliation cash

EAST Down Rural Community Network held the second of its public consultations on where the new tranche of Peace III funding should go, at Sketrick House, Newtownards, on Monday (July 26).

The Peace III programme, bringing together North Down, Ards and Down District councils, will have a continued emphasis on reconciliation and will specifically focus on acknowledging and dealing with the conflict, building positive relations and contributing towards a shared society.

The latest plan for the area during the course of 2009 — 2013 aims to build positive relations at the local level by challenging attitudes towards sectarianism and racism and to support conflict resolution at the local community level.

In order to develop the Plan, the Peace III Partnership has been consulting communities and key stakeholders to identify local needs and issues in relation to sectarianism and racism.

An online survey is available for completion on each of the Councils’ web-sites.

North Down MLA Peter Weir welcomed the funding stream aimed at community organisations and groups organised by the East down Rural Community Network.

He said: “This is an ideal opportunity for local community organisations to help build diversity and cohesion by availing of this wonderful opportunity.”
