Men arrested after ATM raid attempt

Three men have been arrested after gardai foiled a bold attempt to steal an ATM.

Several men were spotted attempting to take a cash machine from the wall of an AIB branch in Co Kerry using heavy machinery at 5am.

Two of the suspects fled the scene on Main Street, Castleisland, in a van which attempted to ram the garda patrol car.

The men abandoned the van approximately 10km outside Castleisland and were pursued on foot by gardai.

Two men, both aged in their 20s, were arrested.

In a follow-up operation a third man was arrested in Listowel in connection with the incident . A garda spokesman said extensive damage was caused to the bank.

"During the course of this operation gardai also recovered heavy machinery," he said.

Forensic officers will examine the scene throughout the day and investigations are continuing.

The first two men were detained at Killarney Garda Station, while the third is being questioned in Tralee.

Gardai later confirmed the three men were from Northern Ireland.
