Men tried to entice boy into van

Parents in Newtownards are being urged to keep a careful watch over their children, following reports of a suspicious approach to a young boy in the town, on Friday afternoon, October 26.

Jim Shannon, MP for Strangford, was contacted by the boy's family on Saturday, who told him that the child was approached by males in a van in the Upper Greenwell Street area of Newtownards.

The men tried to entice the boy into the vehicle but he ran away.

Police are following a number of lines of enquiry and the investigation is ongoing.

Mr Shannon called for the local community to be "vigilant" and work with the police to "ensure that those involved are caught."

He continued: "It is important that parents and their children are aware of the events and that all are cautious and careful in light of the attempted abductions. It seems a little unreal that this has happened in our community but the warning is now in place and we must all listen and take note of it."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at Newtownards on: 0845 600 8000.
