Belfast's Merchant Hotel has submitted plans to expand into the former Ulster Sports Club.

The three storey High Street social venue served its last pint on New Year's Eve after 91 years.

It has been bought by one of Northern Ireland's best known hoteliers, Bill Wolsey.

His Beannchor group has submitted a planning application to knock through from the Merchant Hotel, adding almost 1,200 sq metres over to the well known hotel complex.

But the proposal will see the former social club retained as a bar and lounge area on High Street, albeit falling under the Merchant banner.

The existing High Street access will remain unchanged, with access to the hotel only available to staff.

Beannchor will continue to use both the ground and first floors of the venue as a bar and lounge.
