Irish President Michael D Higgins will officially open the new James Connolly Visitor Centre in west Belfast on Friday.

President Higgins will deliver a speech at the new centre on the Falls Road following a James Connolly pageant parade.

Sinn Fein MP Paul Maskey welcomed the news.

"He will join the Connolly family and visitors from across the world for the opening," he said.

"This new visitor centre is a fantastic venue celebrating the life and legacy of James Connolly and his close links to Belfast. Not only will it be an excellent contribution to the rich history and cultural life of west Belfast but also the entire city."

During his visit to Belfast Michael D Higgins will also visit Windsor Park, where he will tour the Education and Heritage Centre and meet Irish FA staff involved in community and peace-building projects.
