Michaela McAreavey's widower John meets Mauritius PM Pravind Jugnauth

Meeting with PM 'very significant for our families'

John McAreavey, the widower of honeymooner Michaela McAreavey who was murdered in Mauritius, has had a 'significant' meeting with the country's prime minister Pravind Jugnauth.

The 27-year-old Co Tyrone teacher, who was the only daughter of Tyrone gaelic football manager Mickey Harte, was strangled in her room in the luxury Legends hotel in Mauritius in 2011.

Two former hotel workers were acquitted of the crime after a high-profile trial on the holiday island in the summer of 2012.

John McAreavey travelled to Mauritius at the weekend with his sister, Claire, and Mark Harte, Michaela's eldest brother.

Mr McAreavey said he was encouraged by the response from Mauritius authorities and would be back in Mauritius "regularly".

"If we have to be back next week, we will be back, if we have to be back next month, next year, we will be here. We will be back as long as it takes. If I'm still standing here in 20 years, so be it," he told BBC News Northern Ireland.

Mr McAreavey thanked the prime minister and said the meeting was "very significant for our families".

Earlier, Mr McAreavey said talks with senior police officers were "short but positive" and he has been updated on developments.

He was told an elite task force has been set up in Mauritius in a bid to bring those responsible for the killing of Michaela McAreavey to justice.

He said he hoped the new task force uncovered "fresh and compelling evidence".

A confidential hotline is also being set up. Prosecutors have insisted the case remains open and they are determined to bring those to justice.

Mrs McAreavey was killed at the luxury Legends Hotel just 12 days after her wedding.

No-one has been convicted of the murder.

Sandip Moneea and Avinash Treebhoowoon were cleared of the newlywed's murder by a jury at the Supreme Court in Port Louis in July 2012.

The Ballygawley teacher was found dead in the bathtub of her deluxe room shortly after lunching with her husband John at a poolside restaurant.

Mr McAreavey has since remarried.
