Michaella McCollum's family thanks supporters

By Adrian Rutherford

The McCollum family have thanked people who donated to a special fund set up to raise money for Michaella's legal costs.

The Michaella McCollum Appeal Fund was started in September with the ambitious target of raising £20,000 to help the family's bills.

After little public response, the target was revised down to £10,000 – but even this proved to be out of reach.

Yesterday the fund, which has been going almost four months, had attracted £3,970. A total of 89 people have made donations, including one who contributed £1.

In a message to supporters, Michaella's sister Stephanie said it meant a lot to the family.

"I would just like to thank everyone who has been supporting Michaella, it means so much to M and her family. Thank you all xx," she wrote.

In a previous message, Stephanie said the family were facing a massive legal bill and needed financial support.

"Since this living nightmare began we have been overwhelmed with the support and kind words from people. Some of these people are friends and people we know, and others are from kind strangers," she said.

"As I'm sure you all understand, to get Michaella home it may be a lengthy process, but it all depends on her legal representation.

"We plan to visit Michaella as much as we can."
