Ulster Unionist MLA Rosemary Barton has described as "despicable" an attack on police in Dungannon, Co Tyrone.

Police said they came under attack on Thursday evening by a number of people throwing bricks. while out on patrol in the Ballygawley Road area. No officers were hurt.

Ms Barton said: "This is an absolutely despicable, deliberate act of violence against our police officers when they are working within our communities to make it a safe place for everyone to live in, particularly when the country is facing such a health crisis.

“The actions of the individuals responsible must not be tolerated in our society and they should meet the full vigour of the law, particularly now when social distancing and other restrictions are in place to preserve public health.

“I am thankful however, that while the police vehicle was badly damaged, the police officers were not injured.”
