MLA 'without words' as pedestrian third death within 24 hours on same Northern Ireland road

Police have confirmed a 69-year-old man was killed as he crossed a road in Omagh.

He was John Reid - known to his friends and family as Sean. His was the third death on the same stretch of road inside of 24 hours.

He was hit by a car in the Gortrush area of Omagh at around 11.20am on Tuesday on the Great Northern Road.

The Air Ambulance was scrambled to the scene but Mr Reid died at the scene.

One person is currently helping police with their enquiries and officers have appealed for anyone with information to call 101 quoting reference number 430 of 4/9/18.

The death is the latest fatality on the road after an elderly couple were killed in a crash between their car and a lorry on Monday afternoon.

"I am without words," said MLA Daniel McCrossan, a third person has been killed on the A5 road since yesterday."

"I am deeply saddened and shocked to learn that another life has been lost so tragically.

"This is truly devastating and shocking for the entirety of the West Tyrone area.

"My deepest thoughts and prayers are with the families of all involved in what has been a very difficult and tragic loss of human life."

The Great Northern road has now reopened.
