‘MLAs need to focus on elderly’
Major concerns facing Northern Ireland's older generation must be a key priority for Assembly hopefuls in the election, campaigners have urged.
With one in five voters aged over 65, Age NI and Age Sector Platform told candidates they must listen to the problems facing older people.
The groups have highlighted five issues that they say must be dealt with as a matter of urgency by incoming MLAs. They are: tackling fuel poverty; maximising pensioner income; fundamentally reviewing social care provision; ending age discrimination and tackling crime.
Chairman of Age Sector Platform, Bill Carson, explained more about the High 5 campaign. “We have been speaking to older people across Northern Ireland over the last few weeks and it is clear that they have much to say on the issues that need to be addressed by incoming MLAs,” he said.
“Our campaign is based on the key issues that older people have identified and should be seen as essential reading by all parties and candidates.”
