MLA's pledge to victims

Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey has pledged to continue to support the families of five Catholics killed outside Sean Graham’s bookmakers on the Ormeau Road in 1992.

An Historical Enquiries Team (HET) investigation has found that a pistol used in the February 5 massacre had been given back to the UDA killer gang by the RUC.

The victims were Jack Duffin (66), Willie McManus (54), Christie Doherty (52), Peter Magee (18) and James Kennedy (15). The police decision was heavily criticised in the HET report which stated: “Clearly in this case, there was a significant failure and the repercussions were tragic and devastating.”

The UDA subsequently used the weapon in a number of murders, including the 1992 massacre.

Mr Maskey said: “The finding by the HET that the Browning pistol used by the UDA in this attack was handed back to them by the RUC will come as no surprise to the people of the Lower Ormeau area who have long known that a high degree of collusion took place in this attack.

“I would commend the families of those killed in this attack who have never given up in their search for the truth about the killings of their loved ones and I will continue to lend my full support to them in this quest.”
