Model Diona Doherty is ready to pack a punch for charity

By Amanda Poole

Dynamite Diona Doherty is swapping the catwalk for the boxing ring to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

On June 6 at Belfast's Europa Hotel, the model and actress from Derry will be putting up her dukes in a three-round bout with another young woman taking part in The Fight.

The White Collar Boxing NI event has been running for five years and is popular with those keen to take on a new challenge, get fit and raise money for a good cause.

Diona is raising funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care as her grandmother is currently receiving radiotherapy treatment. The 24-year-old starts training at Monkstown Boxing Club next week and can't wait to learn the ropes.

"I did karate when I was seven and I remember during my first tournament I ran from the mat to my mum in the auditorium.

"I hope that doesn't happen again. I'm just going to have to start throwing digs. I am a little nervous about getting my face busted up – if I do, I'll be skint."

Diona featured in series eight of Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model and she's also part of Belfast comedy sketch group FNT Live, which was a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

If you donate to Diona's fundraising site she will be doing "a dare-a-day for 10 days" and then posting video evidence online.
