Mother hits out at Thai reporting of son's death

The mother of a young man from Northern Ireland who died while on holiday in Thailand has hit out at Thai media reports that suggested he was drunk.

Belfast Metropolitan College student Stephen Clifford died after he fell through a roof in an accident in the city of Chiang Mai.

Newspapers in Thailand had suggested the 21-year-old from Carryduff had been drunk and involved in an argument with a female friend at 5am.

But last night, Mr Clifford's mother Kate said it wasn't true. "That is not my Stephen," she said. "He was not drunk, and there was no girl."

Thai media reports also suggested Stephen tried to get into the closed Kad Suan Kaew shopping mall after the bar closed at 5am by jumping fences and getting onto the roof.

But Mrs Clifford said that CCTV footage showed there had been no argument. She also said her son had been picked up at 2.30am and that he had been trying to get back to his hotel, crossing the roof as a short-cut.
