Mugging suspect Jordan Nike McAteer is remanded

A man accused of mugging a man and a woman in the street has been remanded into custody.

Appearing in the dock of Ballymena Magistrates Court in a black coat and tracksuit bottoms, 20-year-old Jordan Nike McAteer was charged with robbing a handbag belonging to Muriel Clements on April 19 and four further offences committed the next day including the theft of alcohol from Tesco in Larne, robbing David Haveron of his mobile phone, and assaulting and resisting police.

Ms Clements was attacked in Agnew Street on Saturday morning while Mr Haveron was attacked on Sunday evening on Main Street, with officers arresting McAteer shortly afterwards.

Police told the court yesterday they believed they could connect McAteer to each of the charges, and although his solicitor did not ask for bail they revealed there were concerns for McAteer's "fragile state in relation to taking his own life" and that he would be psychiatrically assessed in the coming days.

McAteer, with an address at the Simon Community Hostel on Main Street in Larne, was remanded into custody to appear again on May 8.
