Mum tells inquest of agony over son's death

The mother of a young member of the Traveller community wept as she listened to details of her son's death during an inquest in Londonderry Coroner's Court.

A police constable told Coroner Jim Kitson that he was on duty on August 12, 2012 when he received a call from the ex-girlfriend of John Paul Stokes (21) who was concerned that she had not heard from him in two days.

Mr Stokes' mother Margaret was then contacted and confirmed that her son was not with her and a short time later his sister arrived at his flat at Kular Court, Derry, where police forced entry.

The officer explained that when he entered Mr Stokes' flat he found him lying partially suspended against a weights bench.

Mrs Stokes wept as she told the court that her son had been feeling down after he had split up with his girlfriend who was also the mother of his young child.

But she said her son had never expressed any intention of taking his own life.

Mr Kitson found that John Paul Stokes died from hanging after he had been drinking and had had drugs in his system.
