Murder bid conviction quashed

A Co Antrim man jailed for attempting to murder another man with an iron bar has had his conviction quashed.

James Greer (30) will now face a retrial over the alleged attack on Anthony McCrystal.

No further details of the decision reached by the Court of Appeal can be given for legal reasons.

Mr McCrystal (50) suffered severe physical and neurological injuries in the incident at Ballymena's Doury Road estate in June 2011.

Greer, formerly of Rathkyle in Antrim, was subsequently found guilty of attempting to murder him and sentenced to a minimum eight-and-a-half years in prison.

But following an appeal hearing Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan confirmed yesterday that the conviction was to be quashed.
