Murder inquiry after 31-year-old dies following Belfast altercation

Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 31-year-old man after an altercation in Belfast city centre.

The man died in hospital from injuries sustained in the altercation in the Donegall Street area shortly before 1am, the PSNI said.

A 30-year-old man who was arrested at the scene remains in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Geoffrey Boyce, who is leading the investigation, said there would have been quite a number of people in the Donegall Street area at the time of this incident.

"We are keen to speak with as many witnesses and passers-by as possible.

"The investigation team can be contacted by calling 101 quoting reference 94 02/04/17," he added.
