Murdered woman’s ex also tried to knife lover
A man who stabbed his estranged wife to death in broad daylight had attempted to attack her boyfriend moments before he launched the vicious attack.
The victim, named locally as Luisa Cabral Pereira Silva, originally from East Timor, was knifed to death at Merron Mews in Dungannon on Thursday.
Ms Pereira Silva, a mum of two young children from Lisnahull Park in the town, had been living in Northern Ireland for six years.
The attacker is under armed guard in hospital after stabbing himself in the stomach in an apparent suicide attempt.
It is the fourth serious stabbing here in the last week, prompting calls for a clampdown on knife crime.
Sources told the Belfast Telegraph that detectives are treating the attack as a domestic dispute.
It is understood Ms Pereira Silva, who was aged in her late 20s, was walking along the street with her boyfriend when the attack took place around 3.30pm on Thursday.
The attacker — understood to be the victim’s estranged husband — attempted to attack her boyfriend and chased after him with a large knife.
The boyfriend managed to flee and was not injured.
The assailant then turned to Ms Pereira Silva and stabbed her, killing her with a single blow.
He then turned the weapon on himself, plunging the blade into his stomach. A source said: “It appears to be a suicide attempt by the assailant.”
He was taken to Craigavon Area Hospital, where his condition is described as serious but stable.
The victim, her boyfriend and the assailant are all from East Timor, and all three work at the local Moy Park meat processing plant.
Lord Morrow, who is a DUP MLA for the area and chairs the Stormont justice committee, said people were shocked by the stabbing. “We are now contemplating on an awful tragedy that has happened in our town,” he said.
Thursday’s attack follows the fatal stabbing of Michael McLaughlin in Castledawson earlier in the week.
Meanwhile a young nurse from Omagh is still critically ill in hospital after being stabbed in the head on her doorstep.
