Musician pleads guilty to hotel room rampage

A young musician trashed a hotel room after drinking a bottle of whiskey before blacking out, a court has heard.

Laurence Taaffe destroyed a television set and damaged walls and fixtures at Jury's Inn, Belfast, where he was supposed to be attending a formal.

The 20-year-old, of Drumlin Drive, Lurgan, was sentenced to 12 months probation after pleading guilty to a charge of criminal damage. He was also ordered to pay £712 compensation to cover the cost of repairs at the hotel on Fisherwick Place.

Belfast Magistrates Court heard how he was arrested on December 8 last year, apparently under the influence.

Defence barrister Neil Richards said his client had "blacked out" when others went on ahead to the function.

Mr Richards described him as having significant musical skills, able to play a number of instruments and involved in a band.

District Judge Fiona Bagnall imposed a probation order which is to involve participation in a counselling programme.
