New boxing club would see differences left at door

By Brendan McDaid

The father of a prize-winning international boxer has called for a cross-community boxing club to be set up in Londonderry’s Waterside.

Vin McCullagh said that while there are 16 clubs operating in the cityside there is not a single boxing club on the east bank.

Mr McCullagh’s son Tyrone has just returned from competing for Ireland at an international contest in Lithuania. The Derry man’s father now wants to meet with local sporting enthusiasts and political figures to discuss setting up a new club in the Waterside.

Mr McCullagh said the facility could be incorporated into plans for a major new sports campus at St Columb's Park, given the green light several months ago.

Mr McCullagh, whose two other sons are also Ulster champions, said: “Any youngsters in the Waterside that might like to box in the area, that opportunity is denied them at the minute.

“We would hope with this club to include everybody. You could be any religion, any ethnicity — as soon as you come in, differences are left at the door and everyone there is then a boxer.”

Anyone wishing to get in contact with Mr McCullagh about the plan can contact him on 0759 0058884.
