New consultation process on care home closures

It was a bumpy start to consultations about consultations on the future care of 238 men and women in Northern Ireland's residential care homes.

The Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) presented its proposed criteria on which to base the decision to potentially close 20 care homes from early 2015.

The meeting heard a report into how the HSCB had already amended its closure decision-making criteria and how its proposed new consultation process will run in two distinct phases.

It is planned that the new consultation document would be finalised and issued in November, open for responses until January 2014. Following on from the consultation, the process of assessing individual residential care homes in each health trust area will begin from April 2014, with decisions due by year end or early 2015.
