New designer shoes, a meal with pals, and, er, a bag of spuds... Rory celebrates his 24th birthday

He may be thousands of miles from home, but Rory McIlroy still managed to celebrate his birthday with some of his best pals.

The world number two golfer, currently in North Carolina after competing in the Wells Fargo Championships, marked his 24th birthday over the weekend with fellow Holywood golfers and childhood friends Mitchell Tweedie and Ricky McCormick.

On the eve of yesterday's championship, Rory, along with five of his friends, spent the night dining in a fine restaurant before he prepared for his appearance at Quail Hollow. The golf star posted a picture to his Twitter account of the group enjoying the evening celebrations in the US.

Close friends Ricky and Rory grew up together and learned the game at Holywood Golf Club where Ricky now plays professionally. McCormick, who dubs himself as a Liverpool supporter, has previously said that his best friend will never forget his roots.

Noticeably missing from the picture was Rory's tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki who was unable to join the sportsman. But she seems to have made up for her absence in the form of a pair of expensive Louis Vuitton shoes.

The golfer posted a picture of his presents from Wozniacki including a selection of Louis Vuitton gifts which he described as "awesome". After posting the picture to his followers, Ulster Rugby star Stephen Ferris poked fun at the birthday boy by suggesting they were a pair of ladies heels.

On the day, the tennis star gushed to her followers: "Happy birthday to the most amazing person I know! @McIlroyRory today u are the oldest you have ever been and the youngest you will ever be!"

Fellow golfer David Lynn also helped bring an Irish flavour to the birthday celebrations by leaving a bag of potatoes in McIlroy's locker at Quail Hollow. Tweeting about the present Rory said: "Just got to my locker and found these from I'm guessing none other than @DaveLynndawg!! Haha!"

Lynn responded: "@McIlroyRory what do u get a man who has everything, a big smile that's what."

Rory went on to thank his followers for the birthday wishes, before going out and shooting 73 to finish 10th in the event last night.
