New homes boost for Oldpark

By Helen McDowell

A local suburb is due to welcome new neighbours, thanks to a new housing scheme at Lower Oldpark.

Clanmil Housing Association is planning five quality, affordable family homes for rent in the area at Manor Court.

The houses are the first phase of a project that will see a total of 26 formerly vacant properties in Mountview Street, Manor Court and Oldpark Road extensively refurbished to provide two and three bedroom family homes for rent. Work is ongoing on the remaining 21 homes and will be completed next year.

The homes are designed to be energy efficient, and are also being brought up to Secured by Design standards with certified windows and doors and external lighting offering enhanced security.

They will have many elements of the Lifetime Homes standard which ensures flexibility of adaptation if required at a later date including a ground floor toilet. All of the homes benefit from a private, enclosed space to the rear and some also have a garden or parking space to the front.

An active community group, the Lower Oldpark Community Association, is helping drive forward plans for further social and economic development within the area and has been working closely with Clanmil on the refurbishment project.

Clare McCarty, Chief Executive of Clanmil said, "We are making a significant investment to bring these once empty houses back to life as high quality, affordable family homes and we are really looking forward to welcoming our first tenants in November/December followed by more families as the next phases are completed."
