The new mayor and deputy mayor have been elected for Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Sinn Fein's Michaela Boyle gave up her seat as an MLA to contest the local government elections, and has now been named as the first citizen.

She replaces party colleague Maoliosa McHugh, who lost his seat, but has now been handed Ms Boyle's Assembly seat.

Cara Hunter, a newly elected SDLP councillor, was chosen as deputy mayor. Speaking after last night's council meeting, Ms Boyle pledged to focus on key projects in the north west like the A5, expansion of the Magee campus, the medical school and Strabane's Riverine development project.

In a video message outside the Guildhall, Ms Hunter said she was "delighted" to take on the new role.

She added that she hoped to be a voice on the council to help younger people and minorities.
