New unit is to investigate historical Troubles cases
A new police unit dedicated to investigating cold case Troubles atrocities is being set up - but the Chief Constable has warned his force alone cannot deal with Northern Ireland's past.
The work of the Legacy Investigations Branch will begin early next year following the winding down of the Historical Enquiries Team. Chief Constable George Hamilton made the announcement at a meeting of the Policing Board yesterday.
The Legacy Investigations Branch will take over responsibility from the HET as well as probing murders which took place before the establishment of PSNI's Crime Operations Department in 2004.
The work taken on by the new branch will include the Bloody Sunday investigation and the re-examination of the on-the-run cases.
Mr Hamilton said the resource level for this branch was about 70 officers and staff.
