Templepatrick-born artist and academic Professor Anne Carlisle is to receive an OBE in recognition of her services to higher education and the regional economy.

Professor Carlisle, who is vice-chancellor of the University of Falmouth, attended Ballyclare High School, studied at the Ulster Polytechnic, and at the University of the Arts in London.

A fine artist by training, Professor Carlisle founded creative publishing venture Circa Publications with fellow students while she was studying in Northern Ireland.

"Receiving an honour was a huge surprise and it feels wonderful to be recognised in such a way," she said last night. "I feel passionately about the power of creativity and innovation in higher education and the wider economy."

Professor Carlisle added: "I have been privileged to work with many inspiring and committed people throughout my career.

"And I feel very fortunate to have been a part of projects that have made a real difference to the shape of higher education - and in driving regional growth and development."
