New-born roo Kayjo peeks out of mum's pouch at Belfast Zoo

By Staff Reporter

Meet one of Belfast Zoo's newest residents, Kayjo the kangaroo.

Just in time for Christmas, the young Goodfellow's tree kangaroo has been spotted with his head out of the pouch for the first time.

Kayjo was born to mother Jaya and father Hasu Hasu on June 9, this year. He was initially the size of a jelly bean.

Zoo keeper Mitchell Johnston said: "Last summer, I started to notice signs that a joey may be on the way. I carried out a pouch check on Jaya and was delighted to find the jelly bean-sized joey. Being able to witness and photograph the infant's development over the last six months has been fascinating.

"In fact, I have become so fond of both mother and baby that I decided to name him Kayjo, which is a play on words of my eldest child's name, as the joey certainly feels like one of the family!"

Belfast Zoo is open from 10am every day (except Christmas Day and Boxing Day).
