Newtownards mayor's plea over closure of Scrabo Tower
The mayor of Newtownards has urged Stormont to have a rethink over the closure of Scrabo Tower.
The Belfast Telegraph revealed yesterday that one of Northern Ireland's best-loved landmarks is now off-bounds to the public over safety fears after water damage disrupted the electrical supply and lighting.
The decision sparked disappointment from Strangford MP Jim Shannon, and now Newtownards mayor Stephen McIlveen has called for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency to find a solution to the problem.
"This is an iconic landmark in Ards and I know many people love walking in the country park and paying a visit to the tower," he said.
"While I appreciate that the safety of visitors is paramount at sites such as this, I would hope that the problems being faced are not insurmountable and that it will open again soon."
