NI Water worker Gary Smith sought bribes from car wash with no meter

By Staff Reporter

A former staff member at NI Water who took back-handers to overlook the absence of car wash meters has pleaded guilty to fraud through abuse of position.

Gary Smith twice requested and received cash in return for ignoring the absence of a meter in car wash premises.

Smith (56), from The Beeches, Craigavon, was previously accused of blackmailing the business owner by making unwarranted demands for cash, but this was replaced by the current charges.

Craigavon Magistrates Court heard that on a date between October 2017 and January 2018, while occupying a position to safeguard the financial interests of NI Water, Smith dishonestly requested and received payment of £100 cash for overlooking the fact that a Portadown car washing business did not have a water meter on its premises.

The offence was repeated in February 2018, when a similar amount of cash was handed over.

District Judge Bernie Kelly said that pre-sentence reports would be required before sentencing.
