Nigel sets ball rolling for juniors

Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington dropped in to the Irish FA Nutty Krust Summer Soccer School at the BB Pitches at Belvoir last week to cast his eye over budding young footballers from the local area.

And before the coaching session began the children got the chance to ask the international boss some questions as well as getting advice on how to improve their skills.

“I was delighted to have been able to visit the Irish FA Nutty Krust Summer Soccer School at Belvoir and meet all the young players,” said Nigel.

“The soccer schools provide boys and girls with an excellent opportunity to learn new skills and develop as players. The programme is a vital component in the Irish FA’s grassroots strategy and by introducing children to the game at an early age and providing them with a fun and positive experience will, hopefully, in turn generate an interest which will keep them involved in football for life.”

Lee Carroll, the Irish FA’s head of Grassroots Football, added: “This is the second Nutty Krust Summer Soccer School which Nigel has visited this month and it is fantastic to see our international team manager supporting the grassroots programme.

“It gives the kids a great lift and hopefully this visit will help inspire them to continue and develop their football careers. I think it is also important to show that Nigel and all our international team support the work that goes on at grassroots level, as this is where the next generation of future stars is going to come from.”

Co-ordinated by the Irish FA’s grassroots development officers and staffed by qualified coaches, the soccer schools take place each year during July and August and are attended by thousands of boys and girls.

Michael Murphy, Irwin's commercial controller said: “Irwin’s Nutty Krust is delighted to sponsor the Summer Soccer Schools for the fourth year running.”

The Deputy Mayor of Castlereagh, Councillor David Drysdale, added: “Castlereagh Borough Council is very proud to have children from the borough participating in this successful programme and the council fully endorses the Irish FA Nutty Krust Summer Soccer Schools. These schools offer children the chance to meet new friends and develop new skills under the IFA’s Grassroots development officer for Castlereagh, Phil Melville and his coaching team.”
